Supporting Growth in the Far East

The University is playing its part in the development of the world’s ‘growth triangle’ of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

We are providing degree programmes in subject areas that are crucial to the economies of those countries.

In Indonesia, we are working on PMI2-funded projects, with Universitas Indonesia to develop a joint PhD in Biomedical Sciences, and with ITS (Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember) Surabaya, to develop a joint Master's programme in Small Craft Technology.

Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) will deliver degrees in medicine and biomedical science at an international branch campus in Johor, Malaysia, due to open in 2011.

The University has offered a part-time MSc in Marine Technology (International) in Singapore since 2004.

In 2008, at the invitation of the Singapore Ministry of Education, under its Foreign Specialised Institution (FSI) initiative, the School of Marine Science and Technology introduced two new undergraduate degree programmes in Naval Architecture, in co-operation with and based at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

In 2009, working with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), a tertiary institution established by the Ministry of Education, the University has expanded its undergraduate marine provision in Singapore. Three new programmes (launched in September 2010) in Marine Technology offer specialisms in:

Marine Engineering
Naval Architecture
Offshore Engineering
In addition, the University has been invited to develop programmes in Chemical Engineering, Food and Human Nutrition, and Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Engineering, due to be launched in September 2011.
