Sunderland - a city by the sea

The region

The North East of England has one of the most beautiful and varied landscapes in the country. We have striking coastlines, ancient forests and rolling hills - and nestled within them are three cosmopolitan cities: Sunderland, Newcastle upon Tyne and Middlesbrough.

A little-known fact about Sunderland is that not only is it a coastal city, it also has the UK's longest stretch of city-side beach. There are literally miles of unspoilt sandy beaches, and Roker beach - a five-minute walk from St Peter's Campus - even has a £1m watersports centre.

Further afield in the North East region there are nine forests, 28 castles and Roman forts and 65 museums and art galleries. And then of course there are the world-famous heritage sites Hadrian's Wall, Lindisfarne, Holy Island and Durham Cathedral.
